PRESTIGE FRONT COVER
The first thing I had to figure about my music magazine is what genre is my m
usic magazine is going to be based on and the target audience for it. And I chose R’n’b, I chose this because there isn’t a lot of magazines for this genre so I wanted to capitalise on that also I am interested in R’n’b myself so it will be fun for me making my music magazine. The first thing I did was look at other magazine competitors and see the link between them was they always big their celebrity up and use props to do so. Also what I had to figure out for my magazine was the name of my magazine this is really important as the name of a magazine reveals its identity as it has connotations behind it, also the name of my magazine help the potential reader figure out what the genre the magazine is based on, for example the magazine name “KERRANG!” is very effective as it is an onomatopoeic word and it sounds like a guitar chord also the name is very loud and brash which makes us to associate with the music genre, heavy metal. And because the name sound like a guitar chord this gives another clue that the magazine is based on heavy metal as the Guitar is a key instrument in Heavy metal. And already we have all the information about the magazine just from the title.
Another preparation I did for my music magazine was I assessed other music magazines front covers I did music magazines such as “NME, Vibe Kerrang! and others. I assessed through their use of colour, facial expression and body language, use of props and camera shot angle, distance. This prepares for me for my music magazine as it shows how the relationship between the four sections magazine are effective and how they are portrayed. Also the relationship between the four covers gives off the magazine’s target audience.
Picture looks
distorted The plan for my magazine front cover was through mis-en-scene for example the colours I am using for my magazine is a grey background yellow cover lines and red cover lines I chose these colours as these are bright colours so they will stand out from the grey background . Also Red and yellow represent updated news. The facial expression on my person is acting big and hard. The costume on the person on the front cover is wearing a suit and the props, the person on the front cover will be wearing is a watch also too big himself up. The camera shot will be a medium shot so it shows off the suit and shows particular attention to his body language.

Contents
The contents page of a magazine is important for a magazine as i
t helps the potential reader figure out what the magazine is offering and genuinely what the magazine also is about. The contents page is important because in most retail stores the customers are not allowed to skim through the magazine, so if the potential reader wants to find out a bit more about the cover lines the contents page has to be well laid out as the potential reader can quickly find what he/she is looking for. To get ideas for my contents page, I typed in Google images “magazine content pages” but unfortunately I couldn’t find any images of content pages. So I borrowed magazines from my school and the library and looked over their content pages it made me realise that the content in content pages are very specific the content pages has
to do well to attracts its target audience. Also mostly the layout all content pages are all in sections but the sections are mostly used for attract its target audience. for example in NME it has a section called “Gigs” the reason it has a section called gigs because NME target audience are serious musicians. My contents page will have the all the conventions of a music magazine it will be in sections, have pictures and will be on one page. I HAD TO REDESIGN MYCONTENTS PAGE AS IT HAS SO MANY GAPS .
Feature
The main feature on my magazine is going to be a double pa
ge spread on the person on my front cover who is AJ, the double page spread is going to be an interview about the journey behind his fame. I chose to do this because this will attract my target audience. Because my target audience are university students and in the social demographic C1 - C2. This means that my target audience is very ambitious to make it in life. I chose this feat
ure as sort of a lesson to my target audience which is “behind every success there is always a story”. To get ideas for my feature I typed in Google for a magazine that specialises in the same music genre as my magazine the magazine is VIBE, I looked over their articles and was assessing the type of language that was being used and I noticed they used a lot of puns and casual language. But at the same time they also used sophisticated langua
ge as the target audience is aimed at an older audience. Another magazine I looked at that can also give me ideas was young voices. So I typed in google “Young voices magazine” and looked at their interview with R’n’B artists and the first thing I saw different that its aimed at a much younger audience. What made me realise this is Young voices were treating the artist as a celebrity not a music star as most of the questions in the article were to do with their private life. In general my feature needs to be focused on my music star as a musician not as a celebrity.
My magazine mostly follows the normal conventions of a music magazine which is coverline, title , tagline and have a music star on the front cover. My magazine mostly has all these. My magazine doesn’t challenge the conventions of a music magazine as even the image on my front cover of my magazine is typical; it is a medium shot which is mostly common in a music magazine for example in VIBE magazine they mostly have medium shot of music stars on their front cover.
The way my magazine represents social group is fairly well as because most the social groups in my magazine are shown committed to their music or showing how much progress they have made in their music career. Since my magazine is serious about music it is no surprise that my music magazine is based on this.
The media institution that will distribute my magazine will be in shop like HMV and WHsmith the reason why is because those places is where most young people shop where in the shop I would sell my magazine is by the tills because that is where most people would see it in a shop also if I sell my magazine e.g HELLO! OK, LOVE IT. Where in the shop I would sell my magazine is by the tills because that is where most people would see it in a shop.
What I have learnt from the technologies of making this magazine is how to edit pictures and titles. Also I learnt how to use a camera more accurately I can now distinguish the differences between different camera shots and how to use them.
Audience Reaction
Once my magazine was finished. I used my magazine to get sample reactions from the audience . So I can see if my magazine is doing all the right jobs to attract its target audience. I went to an urban nightclub and handed out sheets asking questions to my target audience. The sheet consisted of question like “what genre is the magazine”? “Who is the audience of the magazine”? “How has the magazine represented the artists?”
The majority of the people were right about my magazine. my magazine was based on the genre R’n’b, and the social demographic is C1 - D. The age is for 18 year olds. Also most of the audience reaction said about my magazine is that it represents the artists as have worked hard to get to where there are.
